Newton is a partner and has practiced with the firm since completing law school. His practice focuses primarily on the defense of doctors, nurses and hospitals in medical malpractice cases in North Carolina. A significant portion of his practice has been devoted to the defense of healthcare providers in catastrophic injury cases, and he has developed a special interest in defending the damages portion of catastrophic injury cases and witness preparation. In the non-medical setting, Mr. Newton has been involved in the defense of products liability cases and in a select number of cases on behalf of plaintiffs. He has significant experience with trying multi-week civil jury trials in state superior court and with conducting focus group exercises. In 2009, 2010, 2011 and again in 2012, Mr. Newton was selected for inclusion in North Carolina Super Lawyers1 “Rising Stars” Edition (a category for attorneys 40 years old and younger), selected by peer evaluation in practice area. No more than 2.5% of North Carolina’s attorneys are named to the Rising Stars list. In 2007, 2009 and in 2010, Mr. Newton was voted as one of North Carolina’s “Legal Elite” in the “Young Guns” category (of North Carolina’s best attorneys under 40 years old), in a survey done by Business North Carolina2 magazine. In 2009, Mr. Newton was selected as a Fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America™. The Litigation Counsel of America™ (“LCA”)3 is an invitation-only national trial lawyer honor society. In 2008 and again in 2010, Mr. Newton was elected to serve a two year term as the statewide Treasurer of the North Carolina Chapter of the Association for Hospital Risk Managers. The North Carolina Chapter was established in 1980, has over 200 active members, and focuses on advancing the development and professional practice of healthcare risk management through education and training. Mr. Newton’s law school career included receipt of: a Faculty Award for Achievement in Legal Writing; top academic awards in Complex Civil Litigation, Dispute Resolution and Remedies courses; and Wake Forest’s Moot Court Board Award for Outstanding Contribution. He was also selected as a member of: Wake Forest’s National Moot Court Team (which advanced to compete in the final rounds of the American College of Trial Lawyers’ National Moot Court Competition); the Chief Justice Joseph Branch Inn of Court; and the Order of Barristers. Mr. Newton has given numerous lectures on medical malpractice, legal malpractice, professionalism and civil discovery to physicians, nurses, hospital staff, risk managers, attorneys, and paralegals on current issues and trends in North Carolina. In his spare time, Mr. Newton enjoys running, photography, and blogging as an amateur food critic.
