Mike Hurley was born in Baltimore in 1958 and obtained his
B.A. degree in English Education from the University of
Maryland at College Park in 1981. At St. Louis University
School of Law, he received the school’s highest honors in
both trial and appellate advocacy. He was selected as
"outstanding oralist" and team winner of the school's moot
court competition by visiting jurist William Rehnquist of
the U. S. Supreme Court.
After graduation in 1984, Mr. Hurley accepted a position
with Hays, McConn, Rice & Pickering in Houston in their
insurance-defense section. In 1988 he started his own firm,
defending medical malpractice and general liability cases.
His firm was recognized by the Houston Business Partnership
as the city’s fastest growing law firm for the three-years
ending in 1991.
In 1992, following the birth of his second child, Mr. Hurley
sold his Texas firm to move closer to family in North
Carolina, where he resumed a defense trial-practice. He
joined Yates, McLamb & Weyher, L.L.P. in 1998. He has
recently been recognized in
North Carolina Super
Lawyers
magazine in both 2007 and 2008.1
Mr. Hurley is an avid sailor and former charter captain on
the North Carolina coast. He is the author of
Letters from the Woods
(© 2005 Ragbagger Publishing) and for eight years
published Paddle &
Portage, a journal on wilderness canoeing enjoyed
by more than 10,000 subscribers nationwide. He played
college lacrosse with the Division III MAC-South
championship team at Western Maryland in 1977 and 1978. He
enjoys playing jazz piano and classical guitar. Mr. Hurley
is a partner in the firm.
