Shirley M. Pruitt was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Kellogg Community College, Battle Creek, Michigan in 1984. She began a nursing career as a Neonatal Intensive Care nurse at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and in 1985 she moved to Charleston, South Carolina where she was a charter member of the Neonatal-Pediatric Transport Team at the Medical University of South Carolina.  As a transport nurse, Ms. Pruitt cared for critically ill newborns and children during helicopter, fixed wing and land transports. While working in this capacity, Ms. Pruitt also completed a Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1989. She then attended law school at Wake Forest University and graduated in 1992.

Ms. Pruitt joined the law firm of Yates, McLamb & Weyher, L.L.P. in 1992. Her practice has concentrated in medical malpractice defense, particularly the defense of obstetric cases involving infants with cerebral palsy. She also represents healthcare professionals before licensing boards. Ms. Pruitt is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, the Wake County Bar Association, the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorney and the Defense Research Institute.  She lives in Raleigh with her two children Caroline and Jake. Ms. Pruitt is a partner in the firm.
